Have you ever wondered about the meaning of life?
About your life's purpose?
Have you ever felt meaningless and purposeless and thought, "Maybe if I can just figure out my Life's Purpose, then everything will fall into place"?
I know I've been there, done that and got the T-shirt.
But I've found there's a way to understand and approach purpose and meaning that sets you free to explore the richness of life and be your wonderful self and I'm going to share it with you in this episode.
It's a way that comes without the pitfalls of some of the modern cultural and spiritual ideas about your purpose, so this episode will help you avoid those traps.
Apologies to Douglas Adams...
If you've got a bit of a geek-streak like me, then you've probably spotted the 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' reference in the title and already know why I just couldn't resist covering this topic in episode 42... and if you've no idea what I'm talking about there - don't worry; all will be revealed when you click that play button and enjoy!
Clip from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (BBC):
A life purpose is not a specific activity or external outcome
Chasing a life purpose based on some externally focused 'doing', like a career, job or act of service is setting yourself up for failure. You can become trapped by the sense of purpose being linked to a specific expression.
Purpose and meaning are experiential
In other words, better to base a sense of purpose on something essential (of essence) in nature; something that can be present regardless of circumstance. E.g. If your life purpose is to experience joy, then there are a myriad of ways that it can be fulfilled.
Your life purpose is an evolving thing; allow it to be fluid
You could say that the flavour of the essence can change over time. Early ways I described my purpose were related to being and experiencing Love. Later it became about 'seeing the beauty in everything'. More recently it has been about experiencing and prioritising pleasure... and so it evolves.
Meaning, Meaningless & Choice
"Nothing you do will ever really matter. But it's very important that you do it"
That could seem like he's saying there's no meaning - so what's the point of anything? But the point is the experience itself.
So if we put that quote in the context of meaning, you could say:
"Nothing you do will ultimately have any meaning. But it's very important that you give it meaning"
That YOU give it meaning.
Meaning is about discernment; discerning (choosing) what matters to you and what doesn't. YOU get to decide.
This is where you realise that having strong, healthy boundaries is vital for having a strong sense of purpose.
Boundaries are about getting clear on who you are, what works for you and what doesn't work for you.
"A river is not it's banks but it requires it's banks in order to find itself and flow" - Joel Young
The banks are the river's boundaries. Because they are clear, the river is clearly defined and recognisable for what it is; it flows in a clear direction, with a clear sense of purpose.
When you have strong healthy boundaries and stay true to your essence, your sense of meaning and purpose will thrive.
Boundary issues are one of THE main causes of relational conflict, heart ache and a lack of purpose.
