So today we're going to look at the bigger picture and what role your commitments are playing in shaping your life.

Myths

“I'm not good at commitment" AKA The illusion of "I don't commit"

  • You ARE committed to something, even when you say you're not committed; the question is: What ARE you committed to? prophesy (we’ll get into what commitment really means in a bit…)

“Commitment is hard”

  • The vast majority of what you committed to happened effortlessly
  • Don't confuse the challenge of commitment itself with where the real challenge lies, which is shifting your commitment from something that's not working for you to something else (better)

How your commitments shape your life

Commitment breeds practice and focus (mindset)

  1. Response
  2. Behaviour
  3. Experience
  4. Identity

Committing to STATES that matter (vs outcomes)

It's not always the case that states trump outcomes, but states of being as a focus of commitment generally offer you:

  • Flexibility of outcome
  • Less constraints
  • Creative outcomes (that meet the underlying desire/emotion)
  • Direct relationship to your identity (who you are BEING)

Commitment Audit

  • Where are you consistent (look to repeated patterns/experience).
  • Which of these are not working for you?
    • What ARE you committed to in these cases?
    • How's that working out for you?
  • Are you ready/willing to shift your commitment?
    • What would work better?
  • Consider micro commitments as steps to a larger one
  • Practice
